Hillbillies & Vikings

This site is focused broadly on all descendants of John Denboe, an indentured servant who came to the Crown Colony of Maryland in about the year 1664. Also, it maintains a special emphasis on the descendants of John Denbow (1797-1862) and his brother Bazeleel (1795-1857), early pioneers in the hills of Southeastern Ohio, as well as the descendants of Jón Jónsson (1841-1934) of Dalasýsla, Iceland, who was an Icelandic immigrant to Canada and now has progeny throughout North America.

810 From Find-A-Grave: "Andrew McGurk was born October 8, 1833 in Dunfermline, County Fife, Scotland, the son and oldest known child of James and Emily (BROWN) McGurk. Andrew, his mother Emily and sister Jane emigrated to the United States in Fall 1860. Upon arrival in the States, they settled in Pleasant City, Ohio.

During the Civil War, Andrew McGurk was mustered into a federalized National Guard Unit, Company "C" of the 161st Ohio Regiment. His appearance was described as 5 feet 6 3/4 inches tall, light complexion, blue eyes, and sandy hair.

Andrew was married on December 7, 1866 Summerfield, Ohio to Margaret Ann Oliver. They had seven children.

Andrew was engaged in his trade of weaving after coming to the U.S., and was a master weaver. He wove jacquard coverlets, and later carpets."

829 From Northwestern Financial Review, May 8, 1999: Former Minneapolis banker Jon Bjornson, 80, an executive with Northwestern National Bank, died on March 11. While at the bank, now known as Norwest Bank, Bjornson worked with an advertising agency to promote the bank's famous weatherball. Kristjan Valdimar 'Val' Bjornson (August 29, 1906-March 3, 1987) was a Minnesota writer, newspaper editor, and politician who served as state treasurer for more than two decades. He was born in Minneota, Minnesota of Icelandic descent. In World War II, he served in Navy intelligence, stationed in Iceland. He was able to speak Icelandic, Finnish, Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian. He was part owner of the <i>Minneota Mascot</i> newspaper and an associate editor at the St. Paul Pioneer Press. As the Republican candidate in the United States Senate elections, 1954, he lost to Hubert Humphrey, with whom he sometimes shared a car to travel the state. He died in Minneapolis. The University of Minnesota, his alma mater, and the University of Iceland have a student exchange scholarship named in his honor. Bjornson, Val (1969).
